Nelson Mandela: what we need to know

tonight on the 5th of December the the world mourned the dead of an iconic political leader. Nelson Mandela is Dead.

after surviving decades in prison & keep pushing against enormous punishment that lead to the freedom of a nation, Nelson Mandela became an international symbol for triumph, perseverance & probably the most important human rights advocate of the 20th century.


here are the things we need to know:

  • South Africa’s first black president, dies aged 95 after prolonged illness due to lung infection.  


  • Mandela Was the Son of a Village Chief & had access to the best education in the village.


  • He Became Politically Active While Studying Law at the University of Witwatersrand where he became involved with the African National Congress.


  • Mandela Supported Armed Struggle After During a peaceful protest 69 people are killed & many more are hurt by armed forces of the white-controlled government.


  • Mandela Was Imprisoned for 27 Years for plotting to over-throw South Africa’s apartheid regime.


  • Mandela Rejected Offers of Freedom While In Jail (Video)

  • He Was Married 3 Times & Had 6 Children, strongly fighting against AIDS, disease that killed one of his sons.


  • Mandela Was Elected as the First Black President of South Africa


  • He Promoted Reconciliation Between Whites & Blacks


  • Mandela Was Awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993 & Became a World Icon


Nelson Mandela also founded The Elders, a group of high influential people around the world that work together to progress humanity & deal with social issues.

The Nobel Prize winner had been at ease with his death for the last couple of years & one of his most memorable quotes about it came in an interview he gave for a documentary in 1994:

Death is something inevitable. When a man has done what he considers to be his duty to his people & his country, he can rest in peace. I believe I have made that effort & that is, therefore, why I will sleep for the eternity.
